Maker Faire Rome is an ecosystem of innovation in which great international players and all those who are creating something new meet, exchange, interact and grow.

The biggest European innovation event hosts free creative, innovative, interactive, didactic projects, fruit of passion and, above all, ingenuity.

Maker Faire Rome is a great celebration of innovation, open to all forms of applied creativity, from the most serious ideas to the most imaginative, from new technologies to traditional and artisanal “know how”.

We are looking for innovators and pure innovation: startups, makers, fablabs,  research institutes, schools, universities, artists, designer, hackers, developers and anything else in between

Machine Learning

Machine learning is, without a doubt, a highly transformative technology for the future. Fueled by the breakthroughs in deep learning, predictive algorithms are quickly transforming and disrupting entire business models, with all major tech companies redefining themselves in light of an “AI-first” philosophy.

Consider the newly announced Google Duplex service, which can make phone calls autonomously on your behalf for multiple tasks, such as scheduling or deleting appointments. Behind the scenes, this requires a wide array of different skills, including (a) understanding what the user at the other end of the phone is saying, (b) keeping track of the context of the conservation, (c) generating answers, and (d) transforming these answers into human-like voice. Amazingly, all these skills are powered by deep learning technologies that appeared almost simultaneously in the last few years.

In short: machine learning is evolving quickly and it is being adopted even faster. The session on machine learning (May 18, Room N13, 3:15pm) at the Data Driven Innovation conference will try to analyze how this process is advancing and how companies are responding to the change, with the participation of five guest speakers:

  • Giovanni Galloro (Google) will describe how both cloud solutions and open-sourcing can foster the adoption of machine learning, by lowering the technical requirements required to adopt an AI solution.
  • Raniero Romagnoli (AlmaWave) will focus on the disruption in natural language processing, and how deep learning has reinvented the way we model, analyze and generate language inside businesses and organizations.
  • Gabriele Randelli (HPE) on the use of machine learning in telecommunications, for analyzing and understanding the customer insights and offer personalized support and automated network operations.
  • Manuel Roveri (Politecnico di Milano) on how self-adapation goes much beyond telecommunications, becoming an essential aspect of the internet of things and of cyber-physical systems.
  • Davide Camera (Excelle) on how machine learning can benefit even not-for-profit organizations, by improving their fundraising, investments’ evaluations, and more.

From computer bits to human creativity (and back)

What is the role of data-driven technologies and machine learning for creativity and imagination? Computerized art is being transformed by having access to algorithms that can manipulate (and adapt to) images, text, and audio inputs, and generate novel results. The confounding problem of private data release

In our Big Data era, as data-driven decision making sweeps through all aspects of society, the demands to make useful data available are growing ever louder. For example, the ubiquity of GPS-enabled devices has resulted in a wealth of data about the movements of individuals and populations, which can be analyzed for useful information to aid in city and traffic planning, disaster preparedness, and so on. But the problem of releasing such data without disclosing confidential information, such as the places people visit, is a subtle and difficult one. Is “private data release” an oxymoron? This talk will delve into the motivations of private data release, explore the challenges, and outline some of the historical and recent approaches developed in response to this confounding problem.


Divesh Srivastava is the head of Database Research at AT&T Labs-Research. He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Vice President of the VLDB Endowment, and the managing editor of the Proceedings of the VLDB Endowment (PVLDB). He has served as an associate editor of the ACM Transactions on Database Systems (TODS), and as an associate Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (TKDE). He has presented keynote talks at several international conferences, and his research interests and publications span a variety of topics in data management. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA, and his Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India.

How computers predict us

Monday, March 26 at 4:45 pm the Department of Engineering of Roma Tre University (Via Vito Volterra 60, Rome) together with Maker Faire Rome will host the event “How computers predict us”.

On this occasion we will have the pleasure of hosting Nimrod Kozlovski, one of Cyber’s leading experts in Security, Big Data Analytics, Internet Law and New Media, cofounder of Jerusalem Venture Partners and Professor at the Kellogg Executive MBA and Yale University.
The gathering will also be the opportunity to present Data Driven Innovation 2018, the largest Italian event on Big Data and AI – which Call for Speakers closes on April 5 – promoted by The Department of Engineering of Roma Tre University and organized by Maker Faire Rome – The European Edition.
