Speeches of Gabriele Gattiglia

Data-driven Archaeology

Archaeology is often perceived as an old-fashioned dusty discipline, on the contrary, has developed a strong connection with technologies and digital application, since 1960s. Furthermore, in the last 30+ years, digitisation has changed archaeology deeply, and has increased exponentially the amount of data that can be produced and processed. Archaeological data are characterised by a wide degree of heterogeneity, complexity, and interconnection, which makes a data-driven approach based on algorithmic methods more and more unavoidable. Starting from this premises and through a series of examples (e.g. the ArchAIDE project), the talk will take into consideration issues like Datafication, Data mining, Data visualisation and the challenge of a Big Data approach in Archaeology.
