Nicole Novielli is an Assistant Professor at the University of Bari, where she received a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2010. Her research interests lie at the intersection of software engineering and affective computing with a specific focus on emotion mining from software repositories and natural language processing of developers communication traces. In 2016, she started the workshop series on Emotion Awareness in Software Engineering co-located with the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE), the primer software engineering research conference.

From sequential to parallel computation using the actor model.
Data preprocessing is an essential and time consuming part of every data analysis pipeline. It's crucial to optimize it and to move from a sequential to a parallel design of computation. Nowadays, plenty of models exists for parallel design of algorithms, such as actor model, dataflow, and CSP, just to name a few. We will present a case study about a transition from a sequential model to an actor model implemented in the Akka framework. Furthermore, we will show how we leveraged this solution to support the data preprocessing phase of an empirical study on sentiment analysis in Stack Overflow.Speech language: English
